This story is taken from Matthew 2:1-12
Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the land of Judea, during the rule of King Herod. About the time of Jesus' birth some wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. The wise men were saying, "Where is He who has been King of the Jews? For we have seen His star rise up in the east and we have come to worship him."
King Herod was deeply upset when he heard about the star in the sky, as was everyone else in Jerusalem. So, King Herod called a meeting of the leading priests and the teachers of religious law and he asked, "Where is the Messiah supposed to be born at?" They told King Herod, "In Bethlehem in the land of Judea. For this is what the prophets wrote:
"And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judea,
Are not least among the ruling cities of Judah,
For a ruler will come from you
Who will be the shepherd for my people Israel."
Then King Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared to them. Then the King told the wise men, "Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!"
When the private meeting was over the wise went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem.
The star went ahead of the wise men and stopped over the place where the young child was. When the wise men saw the star, they were filled with great joy! They entered the house and they saw the young child with his mother, Mary. The wise men fell down and they worshiped the young child. Then they opened their treasure chests they gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
When it was time for the wise men to leave, the wise men returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to King Herod.
