This lesson is taken from Mark 2:1-12
Several days had passed and Jesus went back to Capernaum. The news of His return spread quickly throughout the town. Soon the house where Jesus was staying was so full of people that there wasn't any more room for even one more person. And there wasn't even any room outside the door of the house. Jesus was preaching the word of God to all the people.
Some men came to see Jesus and four of the men was carrying a paralyzed man, who was laying on a mat, for Jesus to heal. But the men couldn't get their friend to Jesus. The crowd of people was so great that they couldn't get through. So the men got an idea, they would go up on the roof of the house. You see the houses back then were built of stones, and they had flat roofs. There usually had stairs on the outside that led up to the roof. So the men went up on the roof of the house that Jesus was in, and they dug a hole through the roof of the house making an opening in the roof just above Jesus. Then the men lowered the mat, with the paralyzed man lying on it, through the hole in the roof down in front of Jesus. When Jesus saw how much faith these men had, He said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
Now, some of the teachers of religious law was sitting there in the crowd of people in the house, who was thinking to their selves, "What! This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins!" But, you see these teachers of religious law understood what Jesus was saying, but their thinking was wrong. They was thinking that Jesus was saying He could do something that only God could do. And by the Jewish law the punishment for Jesus saying this was death. But, Jesus wasn't saying anything that was blaspheming, because the truth is Jesus is from God. He is God's Son. And as God's Son, Jesus has the authority to forgive sin.
But Jesus knew what the teachers of the law was thinking. So Jesus said to them, "Why do you think this is blasphemy? Which would have been easier to say to the Paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Get up, pick up your mat and walk? But in order for you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." Jesus then turns to the paralyzed man and said, "I tell you, get up, pick up your mat and go home, because you are healed!"
Then the man got up, and picked up his mat and walked out of the house in full view of all the people. This surprised everyone and they begin to praise God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this before!"
