Peter's Confession

  This lesson is taken from Matthew 16:13-20

One day as Jesus and His disciples were walking along a road, they came to a place called Caesarea Philippi.  Jesus turned to His disciples and asked them, "Who do people say that I am?"  The disciples looked at Jesus.  They had several different answers.

• Some people say, "You are John the Baptist"
• Some people say, "You are Elijah"
• Some people say, "You are Jeremiah"
• Some people say, "You are one of the prophets   

Jesus then looked at all of His disciples and He asked them another question.  "But who do all of you say I am?"  Simon Peter was the first one to answer Jesus.  Peter looked at Jesus and said, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God."

Jesus then said, Simon, son of Jonah, you are blessed, because y Father in Heaven has told you this.  You did not learn this truth about Me from anybody living in this world.  Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.  And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Then Jesus again looked carefully at all His disciples.  He told them something very important.  He told all of His disciples not to tell anyone who Peter said He was.
